Thanks for posting this... Kahneman remains one of my fav. deep thinkers of all time, despite all the negativity that came his way towards the end.
A few things caught my eye:
- that he decided to quit life at 90 on his own terms; several people (some family included) tried to persuade him otherwise pleading his good health, still-good sanity, etc. He stuck to it, knowing well (all too well, one supposes) the cognitive / health decline he witnessed in his own mother and wife. I suppose there is no right/wrong in this. He chose it. Good for him.
I wish the same for me, when the time comes.
- several people felt frustrated about his decision, and felt it was "too early to quit." So be it. It's his decision, not theirs, and in any case, quitting at the peak (one of his own research revelations) DOES feel early to everyone on the outside. Management of feeling of friends/family is, however, not a something that one might call "to the satisfaction of everyone".
Having seen the decline (in health, mental or physical) among various close family & friends, I feel this is one of the most consequential decisions one might have to make.
