What a lame defeatist tone to end an article on. If the author really thinks the situation is so hopeless, why bother writing an article. Is it a silent challenge for someone to prove their pessimism wrong?
At any rate, Stepped up basis taxes are in need of reform precisely because of the distorting lengths people go to obtain them. I have some friends that have been sitting on a house for 10 years and running waiting for mom to die before selling. Similarly, trusts are a headache and almost universal at this point.
IMO, tax law should be be updated to raise the estate tax limit, but also remove most of the trust protections, and basis reassessment.
