The silent majority appreciate each of you, Asahi Lina, Alyssa Rosenzweig, and Hector Martin. You don’t hear from them because it’s not in their nature, for better or worse.
Your generosity and hard work have made possible things that previously seemed impossible. Wonderful things exist because you worked to make them. Thank you.
Did they disable the comment thread visibility for anon/not-logged-in users? I hope they deleted the comments instead of only hiding them from the public eye.
Because the article isn't about the identity of Asahi Lina. That may or may not be an interesting article (I'm deliberately being neutral so as not to spark off-topic discussion), but it isn't the topic of this article.
Focusing on the work and the people:

Nobody cares but the culture war hounds.
If your source for this is kiwi farms, don't post it here. Don't fill HN with their garbage, please.
Marcan is Lina. It's no longer something to be questioned.
From Asahi Lina's creator:
https://archive.is/LrLcE
> It's the worst kept secret in history that I had to keep alive, I have no interest in keeping it alive anymore.
> I mean, Lina started as an april fools joke on Marcan's youtube channel
https://archive.is/OzKeJ
> So yes, Marcan is Asahi Lina, Asahi Lina is Marcan. It's not a secret, it never really was.
> Only really became one when Marcan found out he liked vtubing.
And if you don't like Twitter, Luna is also saying it on Bluesky:
https://archive.is/wZ0N9
> My abuser (asahi lina/marcan) is a Linux kernel contributor.
Does the author not know that Asahi Lina is Hector's vtuber alias? He writes as if they are two separate people.
What is unsafe about writing some code? I don't get this.. also this is like an anime character...wha..?
The code is safe because it's Rust (I'll be here all week) but the death threats are the unsafe part.
What's with those comments? Wow.
Edit: Upon further inspection... almost every phoronix comment thread seems to be this toxic.
It has everything that certain group hates:
- rust
- rust in linux
- vtuber persona
- vtuber persona's gender that doesn't match gender of person under that persona
Too early to tell now for the HN thread, but I came here thinking "this will be a hell of a comment section"...
Typical phoronix-style inflammatory blogspam. If this is what it takes to keep a Linux news site afloat, we're better off without any.
Also, as always, the article is below HN's level...
Did they disable the comment thread visibility for anon/not-logged-in users? I hope they deleted the comments instead of only hiding them from the public eye.
It looks as though they specifically disabled the comments for this article (or moved the thread to an subforum which isn't visible to the public).

They disabled the entire comment thread, even if you're logged in:
Sorry, you are not authorized to view this page. For assistance contact the site administrator.
Here's one of the pages I still had open: https://0x0.st/81X4.png
i am still able to see it; perhaps you're not a paying subscriber, which i (regrettably) am.
edit: yes you do need a phoronix premium or have been a forum member for 3+ years to view the thread.
Not sure about the forum member part, I've been onboard since 2019 and it shows the same error message on my end
Can you upload screenshots for archival purposes? Thanks
Sounds like a good opportunity to save yourself some money.
Why?
Paying money that seemingly goes entirely to supporting a comments section dominated by trolls seems like a bad idea to me. YMMV I guess.
Wow, it was really bad.
If you find this shocking, you're in a quite fortunate bubble.
I doubt it, some of the commenters there have been terrible for years.
> Edit: Upon further inspection... almost every phoronix comment thread seems to be this toxic.
Correct. It's notoriously bad.
It's like the worst of the edgy Linux users of the 90s, but somehow worse.
I can’t even view the comments without signing in. Probably a good thing.

Without a clear confirmation, you'd have to give the benefit of the doubt.

jesus, when's 4chan going to turn up here?

There of handfuls of programming v-tubers on twitch/youtube with avatars ranging from animals to anime girls and ASCII animations.
It's just another aspect of streaming culture at this point.
