This is a really cool, very out-of-date, instance of a "digital archive". In my undergrad days I fell in with the "Digital Humanities" professor and did some research around this sort of thing. Basically, entirely separate from the NLP crowd, there is a parallel world of librarians and archivists who have an incredible amount of interesting material that they would like to make more accessible.
It's surprising how little cross-contamination there is between Digital Humanities and NLP (/ Computer Science / AI / LLM / GenAI /...). If you're interested in working on these kinds of projects, consider reaching out to these people directly!
