When I got a floppy with Doom, I played it on a clone 386 and it ran well (and in fact better than on the PC's of other people I knew).
Not so much because the standard for gaming in 1993 was relative to gaming in 1993 but because Doom is a great game even at 15FPS because it was designed to be a great game even at 15FPS.

Interesting timing…I just finished John Romero’s book Doom Guy. It’s definitely worth the read if you grew up on id’s early games.
Masters of Doom is also an excellent read.
