These types of vulnerabilities have been known for a long time, and the only way to deal with them is locking down the MCP server and/or manually approving requests (the default behavior)
Yeah I also don't understand how this is unexpected. You gave Claude the ability to run arbitrary commands. It did that. It might unexpectedly run dangerous commands even if you don't connect it to malicious emails.
If it allows the system to be exploited in unwanted ways, it's a vulnerability. The fact that companies are marketing a giant security vulnerability as a product doesn't really change that.
It kind of is in the same way that Windows used to be root-only. This was a known issue. / vulnerability because those who understood the risks were generally smart enough to avoid getting exploited. The general population, however, did not understand this and the consequences of this became bigger and bigger.
With AI, there’s a whole class of people who don’t really know what they’re signing up for when installing these types of MCP servers. It may not be a vulnerability, but a solution is necessary.
Most of them are but some of them are good. I like the Cloudflare blog in particular which tends to be very technical, and doesn’t rely on magical infrastructure so you can often enough replicate/explore what they talk about at home.

Yes, it’s content marketing. But out of all the commercial garbage out there, the signal to noise ratio is quite high on avg imo. I find most articles like this somewhat interesting and sometimes even useful. Plus, they’re also free from paywalls and (often) cookie popups. It’s an ecosystem that can work well, as long as the authors maintain integrity: the topic/issue at hand vs the product they’re selling.
Unfortunately, LLMs (or a bad guy with an LLM, if you wish) will probably decimate this communication vector and reduce the SNR ratio soon. Can’t have nice things for too long, especially in a world where it takes less energy to generate the slop than for humans to smell it.
The issue is that the MCP client will run the MCP server as a result of another server output which should never happen- instead the client should ask "would you like me to do that for you?"

Every sensible MCP client does ask by default. They have changed that to auto-allow, likely after going through a pop-up warning about this exact issue, and now proclaim surprise.
There have been a lot of these clickbait articles the past few months about how a company "hacked" MCP of <insert well known company>. They always get upvotes and do well but the take away is what you said at the end of the day.
This exact combo has been my favorite hypothetical example of a lethal trifecta / prompt injection attack for a while: if someone emails my digital assistant / "agent" with instructions on tools it should execute, how confident are we that it won't execute those tools?
The answer for the past 2.5 years - ever since we started wiring up tool calling to LLMs - has been "we can't guarantee they won't execute tools based on malicious instructions that make it into the context".
I'm convinced this is why we still don't have a successful, widely deployed "digital assistant for your email" product despite there being clear demand for one.
The problem with MCP is that it makes it easy for end-users to cobble such a system together themselves without understanding the consequences!

You must never feed user input into a combined instruction and data stream. If the instructions and data can't be separated, that's a broken system and you need to limit its privileges to only the privileges of the user supplying the input.
That's my point exactly. The only acceptable way to feed user input into an LLM is if its capabilities are constrained to only what you'd give the author of the input. If an LLM reads emails, it should only have the ability to create and display output, nothing more.
I like to quip that people need to imagine LLM security as at-least-as-bad as javascript code in someone else's web-browser: A determined person can make them emit whatever they want (as noted above) and also none of the data that went into them is reliably secret either.
As an analogy, it still needs some work through, since it doesn't adequately alarm people about the risks of covertly poisonous data even with an honest user.
And even that’s imperfect if you miss an integration with an externally visible effect- for example an agent with web search can exfiltrate info via visiting specific urls with that log visitors- I’ve POC’d this with claude in the browser, although I only got a few bits out since you need to get N pages ranked on google to exfiltrate log (N!) bits
I suspect people routinely paste urls to documentation into claude code, which it will fetch, or maybe tell it to do web searches. It has those tools built in.

Language models and actors are powerful tools, but I'm kinda terrified with how irresponsibly are they being integrated.
"Prompt injection" is way more scary than "SQL injection"; the latter will just f.up your database, exfiltrate user lists, etc so it's "just" a single disaster - you will rarely get RCE and pivot to an APT. This is thanks to strong isolation: we use dedicated DB servers, set up ACLs. Managed DBs like RDS can be trivially nuked, recreated from a backup, etc.
What's the story with isolating agents? Sandboxing techniques vary with each OS, and provide vastly different capabilities. You also need proper outgoing firewall rules for anything that is accessing the network. So I've been trying to research that, and as far as I can tell, it's just YOLO. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I was amused to notice that the Gemini CLI leans into this, with a `--yolo` flag that will skip confirmation from the user before running tools. Or you can press Ctrl-Y while in the CLI to do the same thing.
Interesting! So this is kinda like whole-program static analysis, but the "program" is like eBPF - no loops, no halting problem, etc. This is great for defence in depth (stops the agent from doing the wrong thing), but IMO the process still needs sandboxing (RCE).
I would love to see a cross-platform sandboxing API (to unify some subset of seccomp, AppCointainer, App Sandbox, pledge, capsicum, etc), perhaps just opportunistic/best-effort (fallback to allow on unsupported capability/platform combinations). We've seen this reinvented over and over again for isolated execution environments (Java, JS, browser extensions...), maybe this will finally trigger the push for something system-level, that any program can use.
Yeah, the CaMeL approach is mainly about data flow analysis - making sure to track how any sources of potentially malicious instructions flow through the system. You need to add sandboxes to that as well - and the generated code from the CaMeL process needs to run in a sandbox.
Back in the day, you could do similar things with a .forward file. I once wrote a script using a .forward file, "expect", "telnet", and "pppd" that would bring up a VPN into my company when I sent a crafted email to my work account.
The corporate IT folks had a pretty good firewall and dialup VPNs, but they also had a "gauntlet" BSD machine that one could use to directly access Internet hosts. So upon receiving the activation email, my script connected to the BSD proxy, then used telnet to reach my Internet host on a port with a ppp daemon listening, and then detached the console and connected it to a local (from the corporate perspective) ppp daemon. Both ppp daemons were configured to escape the non-eight-bit-clean characters in the telnet environment.
I used this for years, because the connection was much faster than the crummy dialup VPN.
I immediately dismantled it when my company issued updated IT policies which prohibited such things. (This was in the early 1990's.)
In the comments here there are basically two schools of thought illustrated:
1. This is how MCP and LLMs work. This is how non-deterministic systems turn out. You wanted agentic AI. This is a natural outcome. What’s the problem?

Most people don't want actual security. They want "good enough" security which provides the illusion of security. Because even when "good enough" security fails there are no consequences so "good enough" security is all we will ever get.
Data breaches are now as common as air disasters and school shootings, so no one except the victims cares anymore. And there aren't enough victims to matter in the financial sense.
It's always about risk, and business and the consumer have made a devil's bargain that the consumer will now take on more risk. LLMs will continue to be developed and used and MCP will worm its way into more and more things because software is accepted to be insecure by default and we all just live with it.
4. A lot of obvious things we want to build with LLMs cannot be implemented in a secure way. Let's figure out the useful things that can be built securely and build those instead.

The problem is that people can say "LLM agent" without realizing that calling this a "vulnerable app" is not only true but a massive understatement.

If nothing else, this serves as a warning call to those using MCP to be aware that an LLM, given access, can do damage.
Devs are used to taking shortcuts and adding vulnerabilities because the chance of abuse seems so remote, but LLMs are external services typically, and you wouldn’t poke a hole a give ssh access to someone you don’t know externally, nor would you advertise internally in your company that an employee could query or delete data randomly if they so chose, so why not at the very least think defensively when writing code? I’ve gotten so lax recently and have let a lot of things slide, but I’m sure to at least speak up when I see these things, just as a reminder.
This probably doesn’t need to be currently downloaded malware. If you have a workflow that says go download any file.py via code execution automated workflow in a carefully crafted email after the innocent victim has, in current session, allowed for an email scanner then the Python script will reliably execute and AI would even download it on behalf of the user and run it.
But in this case and maybe others, AI is just a fancy scripting engine by name of LLMs.
This is not news. You can never secure an LLM by the nature of it being non-deterministic. So you secure everything else around it, like not giving it shell access.
To be clear, I agree that this set-up is unwise and the social engineering aspect is something that human people are vulnerable to, as well.
However, it makes context in the sense of this post as an advertisement for their business. This is somewhat like the value proposition for sawstop. We might say that nobody should stick their hand into a table saw, but that's not an argument against discussing appropriate safeguards. For the table saw, that might be retracting the blade when not in use. For this weird email setup, that might involve only enabling an llm's mcp access to the shell service for a whitelist of emails, or whatever.

Have you read the article? The source of the attack is an inbound email received in the logged in user's mailbox and read by the logged in user's Claude Desktop app.
Did you? It beggars belief how stupid this is. Yes, if you hook up your Claude client to an email MCP and a shell MCP then it's like you're piping emails to your shell.
The underlying cause can be applied in other contexts. There was recently a flow where this vulnerability was exploited through an IDE working on customer tickets.
Don't dismiss the root cause because the usecase is silly. The moment some user provided input reaches an LLM context, all bets are off. If you're running any local tools that provide shell access, then it's RCE, if you're running a browser / fetch tool that's data exfil, and so on.
The root cause is that LLMs receive both commands and data on the same shared channel. Until (if) this gets fixed, we're gonna see lots and lots of similar attacks.
Have you seen an "official" MCP directly provided by an email service yet?
I had assumed they weren't doing this precisely because of the enormous risk - if you have the ability to both read and send email you have all three legs of the lethal trifecta in one MCP!
So far, I have only seen unofficial MCPs for things like Gmail that work using their existing APIs.

Devs are used to taking shortcuts and adding vulnerabilities because the chance of abuse seems so remote, but LLMs are external services typically, and you wouldn’t poke a hole a give ssh access to someone you don’t know externally, nor would you advertise internally in your company that an employee could query or delete data randomly if they so chose, so why not at the very least think defensively when writing code? I’ve gotten so lax recently and have let a lot of things slide, but I’m sure to at least speak up when I see these things, just as a reminder.
This probably doesn’t need to be currently downloaded malware. If you have a workflow that says go download any file.py via code execution automated workflow in a carefully crafted email after the innocent victim has, in current session, allowed for an email scanner then the Python script will reliably execute and AI would even download it on behalf of the user and run it.
But in this case and maybe others, AI is just a fancy scripting engine by name of LLMs.
This is not news. You can never secure an LLM by the nature of it being non-deterministic. So you secure everything else around it, like not giving it shell access.
To be clear, I agree that this set-up is unwise and the social engineering aspect is something that human people are vulnerable to, as well.
However, it makes context in the sense of this post as an advertisement for their business. This is somewhat like the value proposition for sawstop. We might say that nobody should stick their hand into a table saw, but that's not an argument against discussing appropriate safeguards. For the table saw, that might be retracting the blade when not in use. For this weird email setup, that might involve only enabling an llm's mcp access to the shell service for a whitelist of emails, or whatever.
Unfortunately one of the only economically viable use-cases for LLMs is giving them shell access & having them produce+execute code.

The point here is that it's easy to do it to someone else who uses Claude in this way just by sending them an email that Claude reads.

Claude Desktop was the first piece of software to demonstrate MCP support, and today is one of the most popular ways for end users to start using MCPs.
Have you read the article? The source of the attack is an inbound email received in the logged in user's mailbox and read by the logged in user's Claude Desktop app.
Did you? It beggars belief how stupid this is. Yes, if you hook up your Claude client to an email MCP and a shell MCP then it's like you're piping emails to your shell.
The underlying cause can be applied in other contexts. There was recently a flow where this vulnerability was exploited through an IDE working on customer tickets.
Don't dismiss the root cause because the usecase is silly. The moment some user provided input reaches an LLM context, all bets are off. If you're running any local tools that provide shell access, then it's RCE, if you're running a browser / fetch tool that's data exfil, and so on.
The root cause is that LLMs receive both commands and data on the same shared channel. Until (if) this gets fixed, we're gonna see lots and lots of similar attacks.
Lots of people are doing that though.
MCP enabled software gives you a list of options. If you check the Gmail one and the shell one you are instantly vulnerable to this kind of attack.
Stupid? Yes.
Common? Also, yes.
This one targets Claude. But we've already seen it with Copilot and I expect we'll soon see it hit Gemini, and others.
AI is being forcibly integrated across all major systems. Your email provider will set this up, if they haven't already.
Have you seen an "official" MCP directly provided by an email service yet?
I had assumed they weren't doing this precisely because of the enormous risk - if you have the ability to both read and send email you have all three legs of the lethal trifecta in one MCP!
So far, I have only seen unofficial MCPs for things like Gmail that work using their existing APIs.

That second link looks to me like an announcement of MCP client support, which means they get to outsource the really bad decisions to third-party MCP providers and users who select them.
