Hey HN, scrambling every review cycle to track what I did and then align my impact with the company values for my level was becoming painful and tedious. So, I built a little app.
Exceeds (https://getexceeds.com) is a simple journal for logging work accomplishments. You can organize entries by project, and either tag them with competencies you're building (like #system-design or #mentoring) yourself or let the app recommend the tags for the post, and over time you build a clear record of your impact.
Every entry also has a glue-work section to track things that you did that are not specifically for a project, but something that helps with your performance review story.
This is how you would use it:
1. Create tags with description. The descriptions are important for the app to recommend tags for your entries. When I use it, I create tags and descriptions from my company's engineering matrix. For example, you can create a tag "bias-for-action" with description "Moves quickly with incomplete information when the cost of delay..."
2. You can then add paragraphs by adding the tag yourself #bias-for-action or just write the paragraph and the app will recommend values reflected in the paragraph after you save the entry
You can use it for free. I would love for you to give it a go and share feedback.
