I like how the Special Agent's affidavit just looks like his wife caught him sports betting and he figured out a way to make it look like he was really investigating a crime.
As much as I’d like to see their executive team in prison jumpsuits, I have to imagine they throw in the towel on this if the elections go as expected. They can’t possibly believe the Trump regime will be around to protect them forever.
We rightly restrict tobacco advertising because freedom to advertise is balanced with and does not always trump public health. Rights and responsibilities are not absolute, they exist in a complex tapestry of priorities.
> Legalized organ markets would go a long way towards this end
No, it wouldn't.
The only organ you can donate in whole is a kidney. Estimates for a U.S. clearing price are around $15,000 [1]. (Higher in Iran, but mostly absorbed by brokers [2].) For comparison, between CARES, the 2020 supplemental and ARP the median American adult received around $3k ($5k including child benefits). That didn't go a third of "a long way towards" eliminating all poverty.
In exchange you create a monetary incentive for donors to lie about disease status and drug use.
> this solvable problem in exchange for the much more complex problem of there not being enough organs to go around
Sure. Most Americans—including a commanding majority of medical experts—wouldn’t.
You’ve also shifted the goalposts. We weren’t discussing the “problem of there not being enough organs,” but that of whether such a market could be an effective anti-poverty tool.
or, gambling is proven addictive, has provable financial costs to others.. and is therefore regulated. Precedent in Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, some medications, other things.
In other words, in a very free and fair society, I personally see the need for regulation and oversight for this activity. Is that a carte blanche for surveillance and command-and-control things? no .. this is not new, the media over which it takes place is new.

I love how they call it 'prediction markets' instead of 'gambling.'

Do you think there should be a market for voluntary live organ transplants?
Yes
Fine, but first we must eliminate all poverty.

That’s… fine? I don’t mind most Americans disagreeing with me, that doesn’t offend me at all :)
> We weren’t discussing the “problem of there not being enough organs,” but that of whether such a market could be an effective anti-poverty tool.
I’m okay conceding this point. I don’t care whether it relieves poverty or not. That’s not the goal here
> I don’t care whether it relieves poverty or not
That's clear. It's nevertheless what you argued up chain.
> I’m okay conceding this point.
Did you miss this?
It would turn the poor into organ farms for the rich. It would also further incentive coercive organ sales and provide cover for forced organ sales.
I’ll take this solvable problem in exchange for the current state of things
And how might you solve this problem? Consider that nobody else has to date.
No idea. I don’t think I need a solution to this in order to advocate for organ markets, which would resolve a far more pressing concern
Good luck with that.
